4. Silent Hill 3 (PlayStation 2, 2003)
Breaking rank even more than Ghost in the Shell did, Silent Hill 3 doesn’t contain a trace of anime. If anything, SH3 has some of the most realistic character designs we’ve seen in the history of games: lead Heather looks like a girl you might actually, y’know, meet.
And, by that token, the dirty alt-rock of the opening theme, “You’re Not Here,” contrasts wildly with the pristine technical precision of the metal of Guilty Gear X2. And that’s what makes it great – if Heather is a girl you might meet, this is music you might actually listen to outside of the game. Capturing the desperate tone of the game against a backdrop of its disturbing, realistic images – no list of rockin’ intros is complete without it.
